Up to 90% of competing and performing is mental. Most successful athletes use a form of hypnosis to overcome self-doubt and to achieve the focus and concentration necessary to stay on top of their game.
Many professional athletes have benefited from the use of sports hypnotherapy. Time Magazine reported in a cover story on the 1984 Olympics that on the night before the finals in women's gymnastics, Mary Lou Retton, then age 16, lay in bed at the Olympic Village mentally rehearsing her performance ritual. She would later produce a flawless performance and earn a Gold medal at the Olympics.
Phil Jackson (NBA head coach) insists that the Chicago Bulls practiced daily self-hypnosis when he coached Michael Jordan and the Bulls to their 6 NBA Championships. Jackson credited his morning practice of self-hypnosis, meditation, and visualization for their success.
During the 4-6 sports hypnosis sessions, we will target areas such as:
Stress reduction skills
Recovery under pressure
Gaining focus and concentration
Consistency through visualization
Creating a winners mentality.
Hypnosis can improve sports performance by:
Eliminating the memory of poor performances that are creating blocks
Ignoring distractions during performances
Improving self talk
Refining your skills
Overcoming any limiting beliefs, such as fear of failure, or comparing self to another team member
Athletes in all sports are taught to visualize perfect performances in advance of the event. This is because the mind and nervous system can’t tell the difference between the real event and a vividly imagined even.
During the course of the 4-6 weeks, the program also includes a no cost consultation with the client’s coach, and 10 minute phone calls within 24 hrs of a practice or any meets occurring during the hypnosis program. Dr. Alfred Barrios published in the journal, Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice that the success rate of hypnotherapy was 93% after 6 sessions. Behavior therapy has a success rate of 72% after 22 sessions and Psychoanalysis has a 38% success rate after 600 sessions.
With the exception of the first session, which is approximately 90 - 120 minutes, sessions are generally 1 hr. During the first session, we will spend time discussing goals, the areas of importance, the power of the mind. If there are any emotional or belief blocks, we will set a plan to remove and transform the blocks. We will focus on the mental edge for competing rather than just practice. Most sessions are recorded for additional reinforcement.
Do you want to take your performance to the next level? Do you want to see your athletic ability increase to a level not previously thought possible. Together, we can achieve these goals and produce optimal performing success.
